Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered corona virus. COVID 19 is caused by one virus, called severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2, or SARS-CoV 2.s The virus can spread from an infected persons mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing and breathe. One can be infected by breathing in the virus if near someone who has COVID-19 or by touching a contaminated surface and then the eyes, nose and mouth. The virus spreads more easily indoors and in crowded settings. The most common symptoms of covid-19 are fever, cough, tiredness and loss of taste or smell. Testing for covid-19 is done through antigen rapid diagnostic tests (Ag RDTs) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests which require laboratory facilities to be carried out. The outbreak of corona virus, also known as COVID-19, began in Wuhan, China in December 2019. The virus is spreading globally at an alarming rate, with 1,341,907 confirmed infections and 74,476 deaths as of April 7, 2020. Although COVID-19 has been slow to take root in Africa, cases are now spreading rapidly. Since the first case was recorded on the continent on February 14, 2020, Africa has registered 10,018 cases and 484 deaths as of April 7 2020. Within Eastern Africa and the Great Lakes Region, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have the highest number of confirmed cases, respectively 161 and 105, followed by Kenya (158), Uganda (52), Ethiopia (44) and Tanzania (24). South Sudan also registered its first case on April 5. The number of new infections and deaths is expected to continue to rise on a daily basis as long as there is continued contact, both direct and indirect, between infected persons and uninfected members of the population, and the number of uninfected potential hosts within the population is large.

Considering the COVID-19 global public health crisis, this assessment examines the socio- economic impact of the pandemic on communities in Uganda. The living conditions of people in Kireka-C that make it problematic for them to adhere to public health measures will be analyzed. Since COVID-19 is perceived as “imported”, residents are assumed as its potential transmitters, consequently experiencing heightened stigma and isolation. The lockdown has affected people livelihoods and increased income insecurity, sexual and gender based violence and anxiety. Given the paucity of government-led services to contain the epidemic, it is argued that contingency planning must involve refugees and their communities to access accurate and relevant information in appropriate languages. This assessment obtained findings from the people via mini interviews and also used the available literature on the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 in Uganda. The findings were later discussed and interventions were suggested basing on the findings obtained.

Apiculture is one of the businesses which have not been widely explored in most parts of the western region of Uganda as very few households are engaged into this business. Therefore, the business intends to improve local health standards through the use of bee products such as honey. Honey has a lot of health benefits that is; it alleviates sore throats and colds especially to young children thus strengthening their immune system. Honey also promotes burn and wound healing. More so, honey is effective in treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, which are serious complications that can lead to amputation. Besides that, employment opportunities will be created through employing some workers in the region who will be helping to set up the beekeeping project. To this end, I have done detailed research and feasibility studies to help me achieve my business goals and objectives. From the feasibility study and the research l carried out I found out that I have all the requirements needed to set up the bee keeping project for example capital, land and labor since very few households are engaged in bee keeping that means that it will be an advantage for me to secure the market for the bee products. The THH enterprise will be involved in raising and harvesting bee products. I am in the bee keeping industry because I want to leverage on the vast opportunities (the widening demand-supply gap) available in the agriculture industry. This enterprise also aims at contributing to Uganda’s growth by immensely contributing to exportation earnings.
