Subject: agriculture and rural innovations
Author: wamani charity
The SELPS 11is a mandatory requirement for all BARI students that precedes SELPS1 and it requires the student to put in practice the innovation or project that was identified and ranked high in SELPS1 by the community members. This innovation to be implemented must bring about an agricultural and rural development. In this case, I conducted a recap of SELPS1 because the area of analysis was changed and given that different regions have different conditions, any SELPS conducted in a different area cannot be applied to other areas. I was attached to Eco-Agric Ugandain Hoima district in line with the aim of SELPS11. I was targeted to Itara village in Hoima municipality Busiisi division, Kibingo Parish. During the attachment period, I conducted both office and field work for the host organization. In this SELPS recap I selected a community in which I conducted a situation analysis, needs assessment as well as identification of existing s innovations to address the present needs. I later conducted a participatory planning process, implementation of the priority innovation, monitoring and evaluation of the uptake of the innovation. I used tools like interview guides observation check lists and questionnaires. I found out that most pressing need was economic strengthening and the promising innovation for the need was village saving and lending group. I analyzed that During this period, I acquired skills like public speaking, report writing, facilitation and mobilization skills. I learnt lessons like participatory planning by the community builds a sense of ownership of the project to be implemented, the need for gender and cultural sensitivity while working with a diverse group of people and also that planning for activities to be undertaken helps in time management. Based on my field attachment experience, I recommend that the host organization should endeavor to keep motorcycles in good mechanical conditions for the safety of field officers as well as considering their beneficiaries as valuable and capable human being with a choice of working either with them or not. On the contrary, I recommend the institution to offer briefings to students‟ field supervisors over what they are expected to do with them and their log books.

The Farm Management Case Study was carried out atKyanja Agricultural Resource Centre which is located 13.7km from Kampala via Gayaza – Kampala road at Kumusanvu The Kyanja Agricultural resource Centre was set up in 2013 by Kampala Capital City Authority to demonstrate urban agriculture, a special form of food production system in Kampala. The facility is set up on 31 acres of land in Kyanja Parish, Nakawa division. The farm trains over 10,000 visitors from all over Uganda including Kampala, Mukono, Wakiso, Mpigi, Isingiro, Masindi, Mubende, Hoima Luwero, Kiboga, Jinja, Watoto church. These also include a team of staff from KCCA, UNRA, UPDF, Uganda Prisons and students from Bukalasa Agricultural College, Makerere University and MUBS. These are trained on urban farming enterprises at the center. They are also trained on agribusiness management, cost benefit analysis of all enterprises at the resource center. There is always free training at the Centre every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00am to 2:00pm. The soils in the area are as Aric Feralsols found within the Tropical Savanah grassland. The area receives a bimodal, annual rainfall total of 1353 mm, highest in April and lowest in February. The mean annual temperature ranged from 20.30C (lowest in July) to 22.00C (highest in February) [Chapter One]. Chapter Two describes organization and management where top manager within the farm is the managing director. Under him is the farm/operations manager, accountant, agriculturist, team leader and workers. The estate has both crop and animal with a vegetable production unit, Kuroiler brooding unit, Hydroponic fodder unit and Aquaculture (fish farming). The inventories description on the farm include, labor inventory, furniture and fitting inventory, machines, tools and equipment inventory, and farm structures inventory. Physical production records include, vegetable sales record, total sales records, Labor records, fuel records and inventory records. This is shown in Chapters Three and Four. Farm financial analysis of the farm (that includes A Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow Statement); and measures of capital position were carried out and this is indicated in Chapter Five. Results indicate that the Kyanja Agricultural Resource Centre is in a better financial position to continue operating and it will continue to make profits if it continues with the scale of operation or even greater profits with improvement in production techniques. Chapter Six describes how the farm could carry out good budgeting for maximum production in the year 2019. The last Chapter (Chapter Seven) summarizes the problems facing the farm, suggesting possible solutions and recommendations.

Author: mukwaya rebecca
This report is about a field attachment exercise which the student successfully completed within the period of 10 weeks that is to say from 5th June to 6th August at Bugiri local government, Central Registry department. The importance of field attachment is to develop student understanding of work ethics, employment demands and responsibilities, to provide opportunities to interact with stake holders and potential employers and to appreciate field situations that will generate information for co-curricular reviews and improvements. The placement enabled the student to relate the theoretical work from class to the field work hence helping the internee to get exposed and acquire professional skills and ethics. Various knowledge, capabilities and skills were imparted and enhanced throughout the internship period and these were retrieving skills, classification skills, listening skills, auditing skills, communication skills, computer skills, decision making skills, Teamwork and planning skills. The student faced a number of challenges that included working when she was sick, rudeness of some staffs, high lunch expenses and the high transport expenses. The student recommends BDLG to provide allowances to the trainees to enhance their working morale and performance. More so the student recommends Makerere University should organize seminars and conferences for the company heads and owners aimed at teaching them the importance of the internship training to both companies and the students. Makerere University should also provide a fee to interns to cater for the high expenses incurred during the internship period. In conclusion, the report was basically for academic purposes. The internship was the best exercise that exposed the student to the outside environment and therefore there is need to allocate more times of visit by the supervisor as a way to improve on the quality of the internship.

Industrial attachment is one of the mandatory training programmes in pursuing Bachelor of Pharmacy degree offered at Makerere University in which students are allowed to have usually a one month practical experience at an allocated pharmaceutical industry so as to enrich their knowledge of the theoretical aspects already discussed during the university program. Our training only took two weeks due some inconsistencies on the side of the pharmacy department and limited slots offered by the company. Some of the key learning areas included aspects of cGMP, and drug manufacturing unit processes. I had the opportunity to train at CIPLA quality chemicals in luzira. It was a great opportunity witnessing all the cGMP aspects being put into practice at the state-of-the-art pharmaceutical industry. Indispensably, I got to know and strengthen my relations with other trainees including those from other universities and the staff at CiplaQCIL, together with the production officers, site supervisor and company pharmacist. Practical skills were greatly enhanced especially in the areas of quality control tests done, with other methods of learning that included; lectures, discussions, hands on and observations. I was able to visit almost all departments in the industry from which my learning was based. My experience at the company was simply one of the best with the great hospitality of the employees and management. CiplaQCIL is one of the best industries in Africa offering new and affordable medicines being manufactured in a WHO cGMP certified facility. It currently manufactures anti-malarial, antiretrovirals (ARVs) and anti-hepatitis B medicines with plans to venture in other areas. As one of its mandates in offering services to the people, CiplaQCIL offers internship training in various fields such as pharmacy, industrial chemistry, information technology, human resource management, environmental health, human resource management, and engineering among others.

a report on the specifity of glucose oxidase and glucose tolerance test in medical practice

Glucose is a reducing monosaccharide sugar that serves as the principal source of energy for all the body tissues. There are two major peptide hormones secreted by the pancreas, insulin from the beta cells of islets of Langerhans and glucagon from the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans whose coordinated functions regulate glucose metabolism. Glucose enters the cell through the influence of insulin and undergoes a series of reactions to produce energy thus insulin production occurs in conditions of high blood glucose levels and acts to reduce it. Lack of insulin or resistance to insulin at cellular level causes diabetes mellitus during which blood glucose levels increases in blood. Therefore, in diabetes mellitus the blood glucose levels are high. A decreased blood glucose level, hypoglycemia, is often associated with starvation, hyperinsulinanemia and those taking a high dose for insulin therapy. Plasma or blood glucose is measured mainly in the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus. GTT (Glucose tolerance test) measures the ability of the body to tolerate, or cope with, a standard dose of glucose.

The student began the project work with drafting of the work plan with the guidance from the supervisor which started on the 30th, October, 2018 and completed on 09th, November, 2018. The training was done at the department of science, technical and vocation studies building which required to change all the wooden windows to metallic ones. The student was trained under the supervision of one supervisor and that is to say institution su-pervisor. During the training, the student acquired practical knowledge, skills and experience particularly in planning, designing, measuring, welding, fitting work and safety precautions at the workshop. The student acquired practical knowledge in real life situation of work, planning skills, measuring skills, welding skills, socialization skills, team work to mention but a few. This ultimately enhanced my professional development as a person. The student came to understand team work is the back bone of effective communication in a workshop. However the student also faced few challenges while at training. The problem of inability to ac-cess some of machines to work, inadequate materials to complete the work all this limited the student to fully acquire new knowledge The report further represents the conclusion and recommendations. The conclusion has the strength and weaknesses of the student in details and recommendations showing how the weak-nesses can be over came for the benefit of the institution and the student.
