The purpose of this study is to make an assessment of the attitude of primary school pupils towards alcohol consumption by their teachers. The study was carried out in Kalwana Sub-County, Mubende District. The objectives of the study were to; find out why teachers take alcohol; establish pupils’ thinking about teachers’ who take alcohol and establish lived experiences of primary school pupils with teachers who consume alcohol. The study was carried out using descriptive survey research design utilizing qualitative research approach. This was desired because it allows the researcher to acquire deep information from different categories of respondents. Ten (10) teachers and ten (10) pupils were randomly selected because it gave a chance to all the pupils and teachers to participate in the study. Interview guides were used to collect data from both pupils and the teachers. This tool will be used because it caters for individual differences. The data gathered was presented and analyzed using frequencies, tables and percentages. The major findings showed that teachers take alcohol for leisure, as a pastime, and to be happy, to manage burnout and stress To stimulate and sharpen thinking, for confidence and to avoid shyness when speaking, to show off, show economic power, show that you have money and for socialization purposes. The pupils thoughts about teachers’ who take alcohol were; teachers who drink are always absent, teachers who drink alcohol always fight in bars, teachers who drink punish pupils a lot and beat their wives and teachers who drink always have hangovers or illnesses. The experiences of primary school pupils with teachers who consume alcohol were; Over consumption of alcohol by our makes our teachers so rude, When our teachers are drunk, they don’t teach us very well, Teachers who consume much alcohol have separated from their families, teachers who drink alcohol cannot see well on the black board and Teachers who drink are always sick and don not attend to our classes. Conclusively, while primary school teachers in Uganda drink many types of alcohol, alcohol consumption may eventually condemn those teachers who over-drink to professional impotence. The study recommended the government should consider develop a curriculum on effects of drug use in the core subjects while teachers are still at the colleges, seminars for community awareness on influence and effects of alcohol, there is need for drug preventative education and sanitization, improved training is advocated for teachers and will enable them to respond more effectively to the needs of the child and avoid excessive alcohol consumption and enforcing laws on selling and consumption of alcohol by the public among others.

This study was carried out in Myanzi sub-county Kassanda district and the major purpose for the study was to make an assessment of increasing enrolment of pupils in private primary schools. In carrying out this study, three (3) research questions were posed. The study purposely sampled 20 respondents comprising of headteachers, teachers and pupils. The instruments used for data collection were the questionnaires and interview guides. The study reviewed literature on non-academic practices in private primary schools that lead to increased enrolment in private primary schools, academic practices in private primary schools that lead to increased enrolment in private primary schools, strategies for coping with large enrolment in private primary schools. Following from the qualitative nature of the research design, structured interviews and questionnaire tool were used as data collection instruments and Content analysis was used to analyze the findings. The major findings of the study revealed that having educational tours, developing and communicating the school’s brand, entering notable competitions, advertising on social media and setting up a school website can lead to an increased enrolment in private primary schools. Therefore, it was recommended that the government should develop policies to govern enrolment ratios on both human and material resources to ensure that the quality of learning in private primary schools is not compromised by increased enrolment.

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitude of DEPE students towards school practice. The objectives that guided the study were; to find out the pupils‟ opinions about teachers‟ practicum, to find out the lived experiences of teachers subjected to school practice and to establish the teachers‟ opinions about school practice as part of DEPE program. The study was conducted using a descriptive research design because it contains information from different categories of respondents and correlates the findings. The study population included five head teachers, ten DEPE student teachers and fifteen pupils totaling to 40 respondents. The respondents were selected using simple purposive technique. Questionnaires and Interview guides were designed to collect data of the respondents. The data was analyzed and presented using tables, frequencies and percentages. The major findings of the study shows the pupils’ feelings about their teachers’ school practice included; student teachers were always punctual to school, student teachers were interested in the physical education, students teachers were regular at school, student teachers showed concern for their students and student teachers are always happy and always teach us well. The lived experiences of teachers subjected to school practice were; the supervisor was supportive, the supervisor encouraged them during the practice, the supervisor provided enough guidance and direction, the supervisor over worked them, supervisor supervised me closely and that they had a cordial relationship with my supervisor. The teachers’ opinions about school practice as part of DEPE program showed that they are satisfied by the assessment procedure of their supervisor, pupils were so encouraging during the practice, their supervisor provided enough feedback to them during the practice, the supervisor discussed their strength and weakness with them, the supervisor provided an opportunity for reflective teaching and that the assessment by their supervisor is encouraging. The findings concluded that student teachers have positive attitudes towards teaching practice. The study recommended that tutors should ensure that they visit student teachers in both urban and rural schools during teaching practice and supervise them, more orientation should be provided by the institution for student teachers on classroom management and control, the college should ensure that student teachers are posted to schools where access roads are available and student teachers should be made to know that participation in general school administration is among the duties expected of them during teaching practice among others.

This study was carried out in Kakumiro Town council and the major purpose for the study was to assess the early childhood development programmes in primary schools in Kakumiro Town council Kakumiro district. In carrying out this study, three (3) research questions were posed. The study purposely sampled twenty respondents comprising of four headteachers and sixteen teachers. The instrument used for data collection was the interview guide. The study reviewed literature on the assessment of the early childhood development programmes in primary schools, finding out teachers ’lived experience with early childhood development programmes, finding out various early childhood development programmes in primary schools and finding out possible ways of involving teachers in early childhood development programmes. Following from the qualitative nature of the research design, structured interview tool was used as data collection instrument and Content analysis was used to analyze the findings. The major findings of the study revealed that the ECD programmes have been implemented through helping learners acquire knowledge or experience, documenting inputs and context, fidelity and flexibility, having stakeholders such as supervisors and delivery agents. There were challenges reviled such as financial constraints, inadequate teaching and learning resources, high teacher-pupil ratio and inadequate resource materials and facilities. It also showed that early childhood development programmes develop literacy and numeracy skills among learners, learners develop emotional resilience, self-esteem and lifelong love of learning. Therefore, it was recommended that private proprietors and government authorities overseeing the pre-school program should organize frequent in-service training for both teachers and parents with respect to early childhood education curriculum.

This study aimed at assessing the teachers‟ perception towards debates in primary school Bulera sub-county, Mityana district. The study was guided by the following objective: To establish teachers‟ level of participation in school debates, to find out teachers‟ feelings about debates in primary schools and to find out the possible strategies for promoting debates in primary schools. The study was carried out using a cross section research design. The respondents who took part in the study included four head teachers, one from each of the sampled schools, ten teachers and six pupils totaling to twenty respondents. Teachers and pupils were chosen using simple random sampling technique while head teachers were purposely got from the four sampled schools. The data was collected using well-structured questionnaires and interview guides. The data collected was presented and analyzed using tables, frequencies and percentages. Based on the findings of the study the researcher made the following conclusions: the teachers‟ level of participation in school debates are as follows: ending petty arguments, redirecting discussion, a teacher participates in debates by assigning the affirmative and the negative, a teacher may take a role of the monitor during debate and teachers participate in debates by giving time to pupils for research. The teachers‟ feelings about debates in primary schools include: - teachers have a feeling that debating leads to improved critical thinking skills, teachers have a feeling that pupils acquire better poise, speech delivery, and public speaking skills through debating, teachers also have a feeling that debates lead to improved listening and note-taking skills, teachers from different studies have a feeling that debating in primary schools increases self-confidence and debates enhance teamwork skills and collaboration. The possible strategies for promoting debates in primary schools includes:-acknowledging that no ideas are silly ideas, putting yourself in someone else‟s shoes, arranging the seating in a way that invites conversation between students , encouraging step up, step back and encouraging active listening. Teachers should also avoid generic, trite, or over-debated subjects that engender racial and ideological bias and make the debate topics relevant to specific content that has been learned during the year. Done with a little bit of forethought, classroom debates will engage even the students that normally do not participate in class.

This study was carried out in Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality and the major purpose of this study was to assess the impact of alcohol consumption among the youth. The objectives that guided the study were to; find out the causes of alcohol consumption among the youth in Mityana, find out the problems faced by the youth who consume alcohol in Mityana and find out possible solutions that can help to reduce alcohol consumption among the youth in Mityana. The study was carried out using descriptive survey research design utilizing qualitative research approach. The respondents in the study included ten youths and ten local leaders. These were selected using simple random technique which gives equal opportunity to all targeted respondents. Interview guide was used to collect data from the respondents. The data gathered was presented and analyzed using frequencies, tables and percentages whereas description of the findings catered for interview data. The major findings of the study showed that the causes of alcohol consumption among the youth include: -persuasive advertising and marketing of alcohol, easy and wide accessibility for anyone including youth, the price of alcohol is low and easily affordable by the youth, alcohol policies are either non-existent or not fully implemented, boredom, lack of confidence, misinformation and family influence. The problems faced by the youth who consume alcohol include: - brain effects, growth and endocrine effects, liver effects, an excessive use of alcohol is hazardous and harmful for young people and society , heavy and frequent alcohol use may interfere with a young person’s capacity to make prosocial choices and sexual assault whereas the possible solutions that can help to reduce alcohol consumption among the youth include:- raising the price of alcohol, increasing the minimum legal drinking age, school-based prevention programs, family-based prevention programs, alcohol control policies, legislation and regulations should be developed and implemented , information-based public education and strategic information, surveillance and research. The study recommended more public health education is needed in Uganda to guide alcohol abusers as well as prevent those about to drink, PTAs School Management Committees should also be educated on the dangers of alcohol and The Food and Drugs Authority in Uganda should enforce Public Health Act which prohibits minors’ access to alcohol and other drugs.

This study was carried out in Kitenga sub-county Mubende district and the major purpose for the study was to investigate teachers‟ failure to manage time in primary schools. In carrying out this study, three (3) research questions were posed. The study purposely sampled thirty respondents comprising of five headteachers, fifteen teachers and ten pupils. The instruments used for data collection were the interview guides. The study reviewed literature on reasons for teachers‟ failure to manage teaching time, teachers‟ opinion on management of teaching time and possible solutions to poor management of teaching time by teachers. Following from the descriptive survey of the research design, structured interview tools were used as data collection instruments and Content analysis was used to analyze the findings. The major findings of the study revealed that stake holders should make a follow-up of whatever is taking place in schools, teachers should always manage time in order to meet deadline during the process of executing duties and can manage time through day by day activities setting up priorities and organizing the day around the most important tasks. Therefore, the researcher recommended that school managers parents inspectors and should work closely to ensure that there is no poor time management of time and teachers should perform their duties objectively with will, professionalism and passion in order to avoid poor management of time.

In carrying out this study, three (3) research questions were posed. The study purposely sampled 40 respondents comprising of headteachers, teachers, pupils and parents. The instruments used for data collection were the questionnaires and interview guides. The study reviewed literature on the causes of Girl child drop out in primary schools, the effects of Girl child drop out in primary schools and measures that can be put in place to reduce Girl child drop out in primary schools. Following from the qualitative nature of the research design, structured interviews and questionnaire tool were used as data collection instruments to analyze the findings. The major findings of the study revealed that, there are a number of causes of girl child dropout which include the Aids scourge, neglect of parents towards education and sexual harassment, limited counselling and career guidance, early pregnancies. Therefore, the researcher recommends that Girl child dropout in upper primary can be solved by improvement on the type of education provided to pupils’ guidance and counseling services to both pupils and parents to know the importance of maintaining a child in school until the end of the entire period and the effects child dropout in upper primary.

The purpose of the study was to establish the causes of indiscipline in primary schools. It was conducted in selected primary schools in Ssekanyonyi sub county of Mityana District. The study was carried out using a cross-sectional survey design to investigate the attitudes, opinions and feelings as well as experiences of teachers, pupils and head teachers on the indiscipline of pupils. The parent populations for this study was the ten pupils, twenty teachers and ten head teachers of the selected primary schools in Ssekanyonyi sub county of Mityana District out of which four schools were selected purposively. The following instruments were used for data collection; the questionnaires and an interview guides .In this study, quantitative data from the questionnaires was analyzed using frequency counts and frequency tables derived from the responses to the research questions and Qualitative data from interviews was analyzed descriptively and information presented in the narrative form. In conclusion, Pupils’ discipline is of great importance on academic performance of learners in primary schools and therefore, discipline among learners in primary schools can be improve through:- use of rewards to well behaved children, setting of rules and regulations, behaviour contracting among learners, creating good teacher-pupil relationships, provision of guidance and counselling and having prefectural bodies in schools. The researcher recommended the following:- Head teachers should encourage parents to be involved in the transformation of the discipline of their children through holding termly meetings, circulars and various media, such as television and radio and strengthening guidance and counselling among children to provide a good image discipline among pupils in the school. Teachers should guide and counsel pupils to direct them on basic ways of behaviour that is acceptable in the community and should use appropriate discipline measures like rewards to avoid violent measures like kicking, caning which make pupils violent and in disciplined. The pupils should be sensitized by teachers on the values of being disciplined as this will encourage children to behave well and those who are well behaved should be recognized and rewarded on assemblies to encourage other pupils to emulate good way of behaviour.

This study was carried out in Central Division, Mitayna District. The purpose of this study was to assess academic performance among pupils in private and government primary schools. This objectives that guided the study were to; establish the difference in the academic performance of pupils in private and public primary schools, explore the differences in terms of school equipment/facilities between the private and public primary schools, examine the qualification of teachers in private and public primary schools. The research design used in this study is descriptive survey. The population sample included four head teachers, ten teachers and sixteen pupils totaling to twenty respondents. This number of respondents was used because it was enough to obtain the required data. Teachers and pupils were chosen using simple random sampling technique whereas the head teachers were selected using purposive sampling technique from the five sampled schools. Data was collected using the oral interviews, questionnaires and the observation guide. Quantitative data were then entered into the computer for analysis using the Microsoft Word 7 which generated the frequencies and percentages which were used to discuss the findings. The major findings of the study were; it was established that the overall academic performance of private primary schools was better than those in public primary schools. It was established that majority of the students with first grades and second grades came from private primary schools. In addition all the ungraded pupils were from the public primary schools. It was established that private primary schools had adequate and suitable furniture such as tables and desks, public primary schools had more proper instructional materials such as text books and teaching aids and class rooms because these are constructed by the government. However, the study findings showed that public primary schools had the best qualified teachers with the best experience to teach the learners. This could be attributed to the fact that it‟s the government that pay these teachers and deploy them after close supervision. Consequently, the analysis showed that there is a significant difference in academic performance of the pupils from both public primary schools and private primary schools. The study recommended that Primary education should be understood by parents and government as the basic foundation for future levels of education that is secondary, tertiary and university institutions and the government should create a forum where all stakeholders in the business of education will be meeting to discuss areas of problems in primary education in the state and proper solutions to the problems.
