HIGH DROP OUT OF GIRL CHILD IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF KALWANA SUB COUNTY, KASANDA DISTRICT

This study was carried out in Kalwana sub-couty Kassanda district .The major purpose for the study was to find out the factors causing high girl-child drop out in primary schools. In carrying out this study, three (3) research questions were posed. The study purposely sampled 40 respondents comprising of headteachers, teachers, pupils and parents. The instruments used for data collection were the questionnaires and interview guides. The study reviewed literature on the causes of Girl child drop out in primary schools, the effects of Girl child drop out in primary schools and measures that can be put in place to reduce Girl child drop out in primary schools. Following from the qualitative nature of the research design, structured interviews and questionnaire tool were used as data collection instruments to analyze the findings. The major findings of the study revealed that, there are a number of causes of girl child dropout which include the Aids scourge, neglect of parents towards education and sexual harassment, limited counselling and career guidance, early pregnancies. Therefore, the researcher recommends that Girl child dropout in upper primary can be solved by improvement on the type of education provided to pupils’ guidance and counseling services to both pupils and parents to know the importance of maintaining a child in school until the end of the entire period and the effects child dropout in upper primary.
