ATTITUDE OF DEPE PRACTICING TEACHERS TOWARDS SCHOOL PRACTICE: A CASE STUDY OF BUSUUBIZI DEPE CENTRE, MITYANA DISTRICT

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitude of DEPE students towards school practice. The objectives that guided the study were; to find out the pupils‟ opinions about teachers‟ practicum, to find out the lived experiences of teachers subjected to school practice and to establish the teachers‟ opinions about school practice as part of DEPE program. The study was conducted using a descriptive research design because it contains information from different categories of respondents and correlates the findings. The study population included five head teachers, ten DEPE student teachers and fifteen pupils totaling to 40 respondents. The respondents were selected using simple purposive technique. Questionnaires and Interview guides were designed to collect data of the respondents. The data was analyzed and presented using tables, frequencies and percentages. The major findings of the study shows the pupils’ feelings about their teachers’ school practice included; student teachers were always punctual to school, student teachers were interested in the physical education, students teachers were regular at school, student teachers showed concern for their students and student teachers are always happy and always teach us well. The lived experiences of teachers subjected to school practice were; the supervisor was supportive, the supervisor encouraged them during the practice, the supervisor provided enough guidance and direction, the supervisor over worked them, supervisor supervised me closely and that they had a cordial relationship with my supervisor. The teachers’ opinions about school practice as part of DEPE program showed that they are satisfied by the assessment procedure of their supervisor, pupils were so encouraging during the practice, their supervisor provided enough feedback to them during the practice, the supervisor discussed their strength and weakness with them, the supervisor provided an opportunity for reflective teaching and that the assessment by their supervisor is encouraging. The findings concluded that student teachers have positive attitudes towards teaching practice. The study recommended that tutors should ensure that they visit student teachers in both urban and rural schools during teaching practice and supervise them, more orientation should be provided by the institution for student teachers on classroom management and control, the college should ensure that student teachers are posted to schools where access roads are available and student teachers should be made to know that participation in general school administration is among the duties expected of them during teaching practice among others.
