socio-economic impact of covid-19 on the communities in uganda
Level: university
Type: reports
Subject: social sciences
Author: amuge susan imelda
Considering the COVID-19 global public health crisis, this assessment examines the socio- economic impact of the pandemic on communities in Uganda. The living conditions of people in Kireka-C that make it problematic for them to adhere to public health measures will be analyzed. Since COVID-19 is perceived as “imported”, residents are assumed as its potential transmitters, consequently experiencing heightened stigma and isolation. The lockdown has affected people livelihoods and increased income insecurity, sexual and gender based violence and anxiety. Given the paucity of government-led services to contain the epidemic, it is argued that contingency planning must involve refugees and their communities to access accurate and relevant information in appropriate languages. This assessment obtained findings from the people via mini interviews and also used the available literature on the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 in Uganda. The findings were later discussed and interventions were suggested basing on the findings obtained.

Apiculture is one of the businesses which have not been widely explored in most parts of the western region of Uganda as very few households are engaged into this business. Therefore, the business intends to improve local health standards through the use of bee products such as honey. Honey has a lot of health benefits that is; it alleviates sore throats and colds especially to young children thus strengthening their immune system. Honey also promotes burn and wound healing. More so, honey is effective in treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, which are serious complications that can lead to amputation. Besides that, employment opportunities will be created through employing some workers in the region who will be helping to set up the beekeeping project. To this end, I have done detailed research and feasibility studies to help me achieve my business goals and objectives. From the feasibility study and the research l carried out I found out that I have all the requirements needed to set up the bee keeping project for example capital, land and labor since very few households are engaged in bee keeping that means that it will be an advantage for me to secure the market for the bee products. The THH enterprise will be involved in raising and harvesting bee products. I am in the bee keeping industry because I want to leverage on the vast opportunities (the widening demand-supply gap) available in the agriculture industry. This enterprise also aims at contributing to Uganda’s growth by immensely contributing to exportation earnings.

Teenage pregnancy is a global problem that occurs in high, middle- and low-income countries. Uganda is one of the countries with highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa and the figures have increased during the Covid-19 period and mostly in the Eastern region of the country. Therefore, this current study aimed at examining the related factors contributing to teenage pregnancy in Eastern Uganda as the main objective. The study used secondary data from UDHS 2016. A sample size of 1,017 teenagers from Eastern Uganda was considered and data was analyzed using SPSS software at two levels “Univar ate analysis which included frequency distribution tables and bi-variate analysis which included the measure of association using the p-value” Results indicated that majority of the teenage respondents were not pregnant by the time of the survey. The study results also showed that most pregnant teenagers were from rural areas due to the fact that rural adolescents lack access to health services and may not afford the existing health services. Majority heard their first sex in the age group of 12-14 years, majority started cohabiting in the age group of 15 -19 years, majority came from the middle-income families, majority where Catholics, majority attained primary education and the majority were never in union. The bivariate analysis indicated age at firs sex, age at first cohabitation, wealth index, marital status and place of residence were statistically associated with teenage pregnancy since the p-value was less than 0.05. however, education and religion were not significantly associated with teenage pregnancy. Therefore, Social policies designed specifically to mitigate this practice among teenagers could prove effective in reducing teenage pregnancy in Uganda.
