This internship report is a presentation of internship organized by Makerere University to allow students obtain practical training in their particular field of study and gain experience. I carried out my internship at the National Library OF Uganda (Kampala) from the 23rd of August 2021 to the 5th of November 2021 under the supervision of Mr. Amanyabyoona Raymond (field supervisor) and Mr. Ssenono Richard (University Supervisor). The internship report includes details of the student’s experiences; the position occupied the duties and responsibilities like shelving, cataloguing among others. The intern had a great relationship with the field supervisor characterized by independent working, trust, time management, feedback and support. Although he was just a student, the intern was permitted an equitable level of authority at the workplace. This report explains how Libraries are used and how important Libraries are in a country. It is more practical in the field and shows what is done in the real world. It enables students get hands on experience they are expected to work in when they graduate. Lastly under chapter four has the conclusion and recommendations. On the side of the intern, key strength was his possession of a wide range of library skills, computer skills while the key weakness was his little awareness about office etiquette. In the recommendations, future interns are advised to carry out their research from the National Library Of Uganda. This report shows assignments, strength, weakness and challenges I did encounter from the different departments of National Library of Uganda, conclusions and recommendations.

the impact of rainfall variability on coffee production in eastern uganda

Coffee is one of the primary sources of income for millions of smallholder farmers and households, and the price farmers get for their coffee is normally influenced by bean quality in terms of size, and physical attributes, yet all these are majorly determined by variations in the amounts of rainfall received annually in the world’s tropics, and so, the climate remains a key determinant of successful coffee production. This study investigated the impact of rainfall variability on coffee production in Mbale, being guided by three specific objectives; to determine the trend in annual and seasonal rainfall in Mbale between 2000 and 2019, to determine the trend in coffee yields in Mbale between 2000 and 2019, and to establish the effect of rainfall variability on coffee yields in Mbale between 2000 and 2019, using a longitudinal research design using time-series data for 20 years from 2000 to 2019; employing a simple linear regression model, and trends in rainfall and coffee production and MAM and SON rainfall variability were also investigated using the student t-test. Empirical findings of the study revealed MAM rainfall has an increasing significant effect on the volume of coffee produced in Mbale with a p-value of 0.007<0.05, while SON rainfall has an increasing but an insignificant effect on the volume of coffee output, with a p-value of 0.06>0.05. The R-Squared (0.5177) revealed that 51.77% of variations in coffee output volumes is determined by the amount of precipitation received in the MAM and SON seasons. The study recommended for the need for coffee farmers to consider their planting activities more in the MAM season. The study also recommended for the need by the government to avail coffee farmers with periodic weather forecast to enable them make informed farming decisions in their planning processes.

This report explains what I did at the National Library of Uganda during my internship training period. The report is also a course unit of BLIS as a requirement to the fulfillment of my Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science. This internship report focuses on the training undertaken by the intern for a period of 8 weeks. It takes into consideration the name, address, mission, vision, culture and operation of the host institution. The report further gives an insight into the intern’s experiences that is duties and responsibilities, supervision levels, training and skills acquired, working relationship among staff and reporting procedure. It further evaluates the field attachment, that is the level of accomplishment of duties and responsibilities, new knowledge and skills gained, most interesting experience, relatedness of the field attachment with programs taught at the University, challenges faced like dust, lack of enough stationery and lastly how they were managed and benefits derived from field attachment. In conclusion the importance of internship and the recommendations to both the University and host institution that is general implementation of the retention schedule and extension of the training period respectively. It will be of my great pleasure this report serving a benchmark of the library growth and improvement of its services.
