Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: agribusiness

The main aim for this report, was to analyze labor utilization for maize crop production in Mubende district. The specific objectives were: i) to describe the social economic characteristics of the farmers involved in maize crop product, ii) to describe the constraints faced by farmers in ensuring adequate labor supply for maize crop production and iii) to describe the different sources of labor used in maize crop production. Using the snowball sampling technique, I was able to collect data from 180 farmers across Mubende district. With the help of the DAO of Mubende, we were able to identify a prominent maize farmer in each sub county and the farmer led us to the next farmer until the 15th farmer in each sub county. A set of structured questionnaire was administered to each and every farmer in order to obtain the desired answers. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics i.e. frequencies, percentages and mean. In the data analyzed it showed that more men (70.6%) than women (29.4%) where the head of most farm. Most of the farmers (38.6%) used both family and hired labor as sources of labor for maize crop production. And only 1.1% used mechanization on their farms. This shows that maize crop production highly depended on human labor. The most serious constraints faced by farmers are level of farm/family income, high wage rate, age composition of family, lack of timely/adequate supply of labor and, aging of farm labor supplier. These lead to a decrease of maize output. The study recommended the use and improvement of technology to be used on farms in order to increase efficiency and less dependency on human labor. It also recommended that wage rate policies should be reviewed so has to make it affordable to hire workers. Farmers should engage in other income generating activities in order to supplement farm income.
