promoting banana macro propagation to ensure use of clean suckers to reduce disease infestation and increase availability of planting materials to the bananafarmers of kati ka ndegeya village, kalagala subcounty in luwero district.
Level: university
Type: reports
Subject: agriculture and rural innovations
Author: namuleme fatuma

The field attachment was conducted with banana farmers of BajjaBasaagaKibikke farmers Group of Kati KaNdegeya village located in Kalagala Subcounty in Luweero District. BajjaBasaagaKibikke Farmers group works in association with ZAABTA, which was my host organisation. ZAABTA is located Northwest of Kampala, 50km along Kampala Zirobwe road, Zirobwe subcounty Luwero District. I did my SELPS I from DEL Agribusiness and Agrotoursm Farm in Nama Subcounty in Mukono District but because the farm had stopped working with interns, I changed and my SELPS II from ZAABTA. Being my first time in the area, I carried out a rapid rural appraisal where I identified the most pressing need as pests and diseases in banana fields of farmers in Kati KaNdegeya village. I together with the farmers agreed on the banana macro propagation project which is a relatively easy way of producing clean suckers by minimizing sucker transmitted pests and diseases as well as producing upto 64 suckers from one corm making suckers available to farmers. My extension objective was to reduce pest and disease infestation in banana fields in Kati kaNdegeyausing banana macroprogation through demonstrating and training farmers how to multiply suckers in propagators and nursery beds. My research objective was to investigate the impact of banana macropropagation on availability of planting materials My internship objectives were; to scale out the use of banana macro propagationto reduce pests and diseases infestation in farmer’s field in Kati KaNdegeyavillage. To establish the causes of pests and disease infestation in farmers banana fields. Toestablish the impact of pests and diseases on sucker availabity.to establish the impact of pests and disease infestation on the productivity and profitability of the banana growing households. To establish possible solutions to pest and disease infestation in Kati KaNdegeya village. The methods and tools used to disseminate and collect information or data included focus group discussion, questionnaires both evaluation and baseline farmer meetings, demonstrations, observation check lists, pairwise ranking. I found out that men participate in banana growing more than women i.e. (69%) and (31%) respectively because women don’t have total control over land. The technology was adopted by 54% of the farmers who were trained.Though more women attended the training, the innovation was adopted more by men because it requires setting up propagators and nursery beds and providing optimum conditions for the seedling such as regulating the light and watering the seedling daily and therefore requiring a lot of energy. The government through its extension programs need to do more sensitization about the banana macro propagation being that banana is a major staple in Central Uganda and a major source of livelihood in most western districts of Uganda.

Subject: agriculture and rural innovations
Author: kakumba alex solomon

This study was conducted during SELPs program where a Bari student is attached to agricultural organization or project to practically use the knowledge and skills he have acquired from the university. This study was conducted in Lwatimba village, Mataaji parish Bukomero Town council in Kiboga district. Lwatimba village is a community comprised of livestock farmers and crop growers. I was attached to spark agro initiative located in Nansana which operates in all the parts of the country.Spark agro initiative attached me to Pral mixed farm in Lwatimba village for my field activities. This study was conducted using action research design where you take action as you learn from those actions. This study focuses on the factors that influenced livestock and participation in hay making trainings that I conducted in the community to overcome the problem of fodder shortage during dry season. I found out that Lwatimba village is among the communities where livestock is one of the major economic activity done in the community through using RRA approach in analyzing the situation. Data collection methods used include interview, observation, focus group discussion and secondary data. Factors identified include; socio, political, economic and physical factors. Extension methods used include demonstrations, meetings, phone calls, home and farm visits.

promoting sack gardening for food security and reduction of land fragmentation impacts in kyetume village, zirobwe sub county in luwero district
Level: university
Type: reports
Subject: agriculture and rural innovations
Author: nalule hadijah

The report was about SELPs II on sack gardening in Kyetume village as a farming strategy/innovation for adapting to the limited arable land resulting from land fragmentation,It was done basing on three objective namely; to establish the causes of food insecurity in relation to Kyetume village, to establish the impact of highly fragmented land on the productivity and profitability of the farming households and to establish possible solutions to food insecurity in relation to Kyetume village. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research designs with observation, focused group discussions and interviews being used as the main tools of data collection. The intern used a population of 10 farming households which comprised of 40 participants using the random sampling technique. It was established that majority of the farmers carried out subsistence farming, growing crops and rearing animals on a small scale using rudimentary tools. Farmers were faced with challenges such as; limited land, declining soil fertility, unpredictable weather changes, pests and diseases, among others. The intern learnt the dynamics of project implementation, nursery bed management, sack gardening, making compost manure and various agronomic practices. The intern also acquired a skill of operating a sprinkling machine to irrigate other than rain fed agriculture, planning and evaluating for exhibitions.

promoting modern ways of drying rice by rice seed multiplication associations in sodogo village, payaru parish ukusijoni sub-county adjumani district to reduce post harvest losses during drying
Level: university
Type: reports
Subject: agricultural and rural innovation
Author: mamawi james

The supervised experience learning project (SELPS) was conducted in Sodogo village Payaru parish, ukusijoni subcourty in Adjumani District under Adjumani District Farmers Development Association. The organization is an independent non-government organization that was founded in 1996by six Makerere student from Luwero in response to challenge of poverty that was as a result of social and economic disruption caused by military conflict of 1980 to 1986.In eastern Uganda the organization operates in Kamuli, Luuka and Iganga with one field station office in Bunangwe zone Kamuli town council. Theorganization at times works in partnership with other NGOs like harvest plus, ISU and USAID. The intern did their first internship from CEFORD but because the organization did not have any agricultural or livelihood projects running at the time of placement, the intern changed to ADFA. This called for a quick situation analysis and needs assessment in the new area of operation together with the farmers in the community to identify the most pressing need which would be a basis for developing a project to address the problem. The farmers prioritized poor methods of drying rice such as use of animal skins, drying on a bare ground as their main problems. Together with the farmers, we came up with the use of carpets and use of drying slab. Therefore my extension objective was to reduce on the post harvest losses during drying through adopting modern methods of drying rice. My research objective was to assess the impact of using traditional methods of drying on the quality and quantity of rice grain. The methods and tools used to disseminate and collect information or data included focus group discussion, questionnaires, farmer meetings, farmer training, demonstrations, home and farm visits. The intern found out that more women participate in rice growing than men that is (61%) and (39%) respectively. The technology was adopted by 45% of the farmers who were trained. The intern learnt that farmers have a variety of traditional methods that they use for drying including use of animal skins and use of bare ground. The main reasons for adoption included easiness of the methods used and need to improve quality and quantity of produce obtained. Reasons for not adopting included rigidity of the farmers and high costs of the material used. Through our interaction with the farmers we learnt that they cannot afford the modern materials. We therefore recommend the government to provide farmers with the modern materials such as tauplins, build drying slabs etc.
