From 1986 upto today when Uganda as a country has had a stable political and economic environment, sustainable economic growth is still a challenge for the government. Several initiatives such as “Mbona Mbagagawale”,”Emyooga” have been introduced to boost incomes to the lowest administrative units. Results achieved are not satisfying enough despite the huge funds utilized. We believe that economic growth and development at the lowest administrative units requires much more than just provision of funds. It requires tracking, monitoring and analysis of all financial groups to guide the financial decisions.
weed detection and monitoring system
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: computer science
Author: muwonge lawrence
Weeds are a major constraint to the success of crop growth. Crops worldwide are affected by weeds which reduces yields. Even more challenging is how long farmers usually take to determine how they have infested their farms. The traditional method of detecting the weeds by farmers is by use of their human eyes. This has been found to be tedious in a way that is time consuming and labour consuming, especially when dealing with a large piece of land. Also, this method only requires physical presence of the farmers. The objective of this project therefore was to develop an AI weed detection and monitoring system (mobile application) that acts as a companion to farmers by providing them with day-today information about the infestation of weeds on their farms to enable them take immediate, knowledgeable and appropriate decisions. The project involves the system taking pictures of the farm and then processing them (by the trained model), from which the corresponding answers of whether or not, and which type of weed or crop detected is provided. Various methods were used to gather requirements which include interviews and study of the existing systems. In conclusion, the use of this AI weed detection and monitoring system enables farmers and agriculturalists to take effective and informative decisions about weed control which increases their rate of crop production. In addition, it facilitates remote monitoring of the weed growth on the farm by the farmer effectively.
crime and emergency alert system
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: information systems and technology
Author: ssemuddu merit ronald
The Crime Emergency Alert System entails an introduction, problem statement, literature review, methodology, system analysis, and design, system implementation, recommendation, and conclusion. There is a need to come up with an automated crime and emergency alert system to bridge the gap in crime detection and reporting to the relevant authorities timely for sustained socio-economic development in Uganda. The problem statement entails that the notable crime and emergency reporting platforms are lopsided and not intuitive. The process of reporting crimes and emergencies to security agencies remains difficult. The face-to-face platform is also unidirectional in the sense that it doesn't have immediate feedback for the members of the society. The main objective was to develop a mobile-based crime and emergency alert system that will be used by the public and Uganda Police Force for quick and feedback-oriented dissemination of information and the other objectives are to design, implement, test, and validate the crime and emergency alert system. The literature review chapter encompasses the review of related literature generated from authentic publications like books, articles, or any other related sources that may be concerned with the research problem being investigated to ascertain and evaluate the existing work in detail. The methodology chapter explains the method that was used by the researchers to conduct this research study. It explains the data collected tools, and techniques that were used. We mainly used the online survey which we designed questions and were sent out to people in different places of metropolitan Kampala to fill in or give unbiased feedback. The System Analysis and Design chapter describes the system study, analysis, design, strengths and weaknesses of the current system, context level diagrams, and Entity relationship diagram. The system implementation, testing, and validation chapter describes how the report dealt with the implementation, representation of the system user interfaces, and also findings from the testing of the system from which conclusions were drawn. This study provides a baseline survey to implement a secure and efficient Crime Emergency Alert System.
kombucha production in uganda: quality aspects and compliance with standards
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: food safety and quality management
Author: rehema meeme
Kombucha is a slightly sweet and acidic fermented tea beverage. It’s production and consumption in Uganda is on the rise due to associated claimed nutritional and health benefits to the consumers for example ,it is reported to help prevent bladder infections, reduce kidney calcification, protect against diabetes and increase body’s resistance to cancer. There has been limited information on the quality and safety of commercially produced Kombucha in Uganda. This study evaluated knowledge and practices of Kombucha processors (n=8) with certified and uncertified products in Uganda. It also evaluated the quality and safety of certified (n=4) and uncertified (n=4) Kombucha. A Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plan for Kombucha processing was developed and validated. Majority of the processors (n=6) had very good (scores above 75%) knowledge and practices related to food safety. Most processors (n=6) did not know the importance of sanitizing equipment. Half of the processors did not know about HACCP, its pre-requisites and Kombucha specification. Processors (n=4) did not use objectives methods to test product readiness. Half of the processors (n=4) did not follow the Kombucha specification while (n=5) had no HACCP plan. All products passed the Kombucha requirements for Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., acidity and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium). However, 75% of the products did not meet the quality and safety specifications for Kombucha. A HACCP plan with three CCPs and five CPs was developed and validated. Adoption of the HACCP plan resulted in the products complying with the yeast and molds requirements as specified in Kombucha specification (US 2037: 2019). Hence, adoption and implementation of the HACCP plan resulted in significant improvement of quality and safety of Kombucha. This study, therefore, informs Kombucha processors and regulators on the safety and quality of Kombucha on the market, importance of HACCP plan development, training and implementation, which will lead to improved regulation and compliance with the relevant food safety standards in future.

examining the form and structure of selected ganda children play songs
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: arts with education
Author: nantayi tasha olwen
This essay examines the inherent form and structure of the selected Ganda children play songs of Central Uganda. Basing on the collected examples of the children play songs from the community of the Baganda particularly Mukono and Mityana, the essay examines the unique performances of the play songs that define their form and structure in relation to their social value. The terms form and structure are used often used synonymously but for the purpose of this study we shall define, form as the fixed types or classifications or genres or shapes that the children play songs take depending on their purpose, social value and context performance. Therefore, it is form that usually determines the intrinsic structures that will make up the rhymes. In this sense, we can pin point structure as the sequential organization or arrangement of these parts or elements, that is, the linearity of components that make up the children play songs. The essay further notes the subtle detrition of these play songs with the increased influence of technology, as children are more passive with the virtual games. Conclusively, the central focus is on understanding the form and structure of the play songs which renders them tools of social values and harmony. Therefore there is a need to draw more attention to the children play songs as Ganda culture reservoirs and moral tools to pass on to future generations.

Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: arts with education
Author: namugenyi rose mary
In this dissertation which aims at establishing different ambiguous aspects in Luganda proverbs and assessing the role of the ambiguity of the proverb to the interpretation and contextual use of the proverbs, it shall be noted that that proverbs are not created by the folk but rather by an individual. Someone at some time and somewhere couches a general observation, behaviour, or experience into a short complete sentence that subsequently is picked up by others who might well change the wording slightly resulting in a number of variants until a standard formulation result. Lord John Russell said it best, when he defined a proverb as One man’s wit, and all men’s wisdom that in itself has become proverbial as The wit of one and the wisdom of many (Taylor, 1975: 68). It shall be noted that proverbs are a part of a wider oral literature of a society which include oral narratives like: myths, legends, folktales and fables; short formulaic forms like: proverbs, riddles, tongue twisters, and similes; poetic forms like: epics, lullabies, children’s rhymes, recitations, popular poetry, festive songs, popular songs and several other forms.(Abasi Kiyimba (2014, p8). Language can lead to many ambiguous utterances. A mere word or a phrase may, in its relationship to other words or phrases, force a reader or listener to attempt to construe its meaning in more than one way. (Maria Kadlub, 2017, p,44) in the study, the different forms of ambiguity in Luganda proverbs, I came in agreement with Lina Bikeliene that linguistic ambiguity could be discerned in five main types: phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactic, and contextual ambiguities. (Lina Bikelienė , 2017, p101). The study also notes the key roles of ambiguity in the language as per selected Luganda proverbs as cultural differentiation, Rich imagination and esthetic effect, multiplicity of interpretation, Flexibility in language and interpretation, and moral value.
