This project presents the results of study of imagery and the theme of child upbringing in selected Sebei proverbs. A research was carried out where 50proverbs were collected and each one of them that was initially in sabiny was translated to English, after which each one of the Proverbs was categorized under the different aspects of style and ideas. Through the methodology used which was mainly interviews, it was discovered that proverbs were mainly used by the elderly to warn, advice, curb a vice and even to teach, depending on the circumstances at hand. It was also noted that one's attitude towards Proverbs depends on their interests towards them since today the younger generation are more taken up in other activities which is why they tend to brush off proverbs as being traditional. Besides that, factors like schools which prohibit the use of vernacular in schools and rural urban migrations that deprive children of knowing their local languages. It was noted that it is the elderly who often use them which means they are still relevant in our societies since we live with some of these people which means the younger generation can still learn and adapt the use of proverbs if they are interested, their attitude towards them determines whether this is possible

THE BLUE-SKY FUND is a micro lending business that is intended to provide micro banking services to the unemployed, low-income earners, the youth and marginalized women who otherwise have no other access to financial access, Often, small and individual businesses don’t have access to traditional financial resources from major institutions mainly because the major commercial banks require collateral for lending yet many of the poor lack collateral, this therefore has made it hard for the poor to access loans, insurance and investments that will help them grow their businesses. The main purpose of this institution is to enable all kinds of people in the community have access to financial services by providing a wide range of services such as small loans, saving accounts, financial literacy and later on provide small insurance services in case of disasters such as death, diseases. The blue sky fund will provide loans to the extremely poor people for self employment to generate income which facilities themselves and their families, this institution will also act as a source of social economic development of the poor and small scale business holders because it will morally and ethically motivate the poor to work. A borrower usually uses microloans if they do not have access to local financial institutions, if they have poor credit, or if they want a loan smaller than what their bank will allow, therefore our institution is to provide such services that the poor cannot access at major financial institutions like banks. Women particularly benefit from our services therefore our business targets women empowerment by positively influencing women’s decision making power and enhancing their overall social economic sector through giving them small loans to finance or start up their businesses. THE BLUE SKY FUND believes that, by developing the financially excluded population through providing micro-loans, the overall economy can develop in a better way and will help in attaining stability in the economic setup.

using a change of urban land use and distribution of housing facilities to update physical development plans: a case study kawempe division, kampala
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: surveying and land information systems
Author: asiimwe micheal

A big threat to development of Kampala and in particular the area under study is lack of approved and up-to-date physical development plans that match the developments on ground (UNEP, 2002; Kamete et al, 2001). This is evident from the existing physical development plans that exist. These include Kawempe physical development plan of 1994 and physical development plan of Kampala city 2013.This implies that planning authority had taken 19 years without an updated development plan. The Planning approaches such as top-down, bottom-up and composite approaches that urban /city planners and other planning authorities use are slow because they are inflexible, bureaucratic and have highly imposed processes at each stage. That’s the reason this research project used a change of urban land use and distribution of housing facilities as an approach to update physical development plans The researcher used a descriptive research design which used both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection using a sample of 98 respondents that were selected using purposive and simple random sampling techniques with the questionnaires and the interviews guides as data collection tools. Physical development plans for a period of 1994 to 2013 and orthophotos of 1994, 2013 and 2019 were overlayed with the corresponding physical development plans to draw the analysis in relation to the existing parameters being used which include; Population data topographical map, Cadastral map, Previously updated structural plans, social economic data and main grid system. These parameters were later substituted with the economic activity, Development control procedures, Nature of the household, Tenure of the land. The data was analysed using Arc GIS 10.2 and the spatial content was analysed using Microsoft excel and SPSS to draw tables, graphs and charts. The major findings of this study reveals that parameters based on existing approaches such as top-down, bottom-up and composite approaches are too slow to conform to the developments and it later reveals that new parameters based on the suggested approach of using of a change of urban land use and distribution of housing facilities such as economic activities, development control procedures nature of the house hold and tenure of the land are cheap to construct a physical development plan. The major recommendation was that city/urban planners should adopt a change of urban land use and distribution of housing facilities to update physical development plans.

design of an automatic garbage monitoring system
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: electrical engineering
Author: arinda osten & migisa ibrahim

Garbage management is one of the challenges experienced by most cities and towns today and this is due to poor management of garbage collection. Environmental sanitation is very important for heathy communities and living. In most of our societies waste bins are kept without proper monitoring until they are filled to the extent of overflowing and spilling out to the surrounding. This poor management leads to spread of garbage in communities which in turn leads to unhealthy conditions in the community, stimulation of diseases and degrades beauty of the area. For smart cities, waste bins need to be monitored and controlled to ensure healthy and clean communities and with the present technological advancement, real time control and monitoring of waste disposal is a challenging area that greatly needs intervention. The traditional approach of monitoring waste in waste bins placed in cities and towns is very tedious and an inefficient way that is time consuming, requires too much human effort and cost which contradicts smart city requirements. To improve on garbage management and cleanliness of the society, this project presents the design and development of an IOT automatic garbage monitoring system with Arduino microcontroller working with the ultrasonic sensors that detect the level of waste in the garbage and constantly at regular intervals displays the weight and level status on an OLED screen, as well as send the content information to a web page that displays the garbage level and weight. A message alert would also be sent as a notification in case threshold values of both weight and level were exceeded plus a buzzer that notifies people not to add in garbage. This was achieved using Arduino Nano microcontroller, a WI-FI module, GSM module, weight sensor and ultrasonic sensors. The prototype was designed and simulated using Proteus 8.0 professional simulation software and thereafter developed on a printed circuit board. Experimental results demonstrated a promising solution to garbage monitoring since a couple of testing runs were carried out to evaluate the prototype workability in real situations. The measured parameters (level and weight) from the garbage bins were transmitted to the web page; this web page performs visualization of the bin status showing the level and weight of the garbage in real time for viewing. The designed and developed prototype is therefore an innovation that will help improve on garbage monitoring and control thereby promoting smart, clean and well managed cities.

the power of symbolism in ateso folktales

Type: dissertations
Subject: education
Author: akello vivian racheal

This research article investigates the various Ateso folktales (narratives) and the aspect of symbolism embedded in them.It discusses the Teso narratives and the symbols used in them to bring out the traits of characters in the Folktales and the major ideas or themes in them. Some other stylistic devices that have been used in this Folktales are also indentified. A major purpose for this study is due to limited research and appreciation of the literariness of folktales in Teso communities. Teso is being consumed by the Western culture and have forgotten the benefit ofthese tales to us and by carrying it as it, I hope someone finds it and appreciates the various benefits and beauty of these tales. This study uses quantitative analysis techniques. The studyobserves performance and then recorded them, had focus groups, interviews and others, hence collection of folktales. The study collects about 8 Ateso folktales and analyses each of these tales on a literary basis of the plot, theme, character and stylistic devices used.
