distribution network economy and logistics performance of fresh milk processing firms in kenya
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: supply chain
Author: chugi, samuel k

The study investigated how the distribution network economy influenced the logistics performance of fresh milk processing firms in Kenya. Determining the adoption levels of distribution network economy by fresh milk processing firms in Kenya and to establishing the relationship of distribution network economy and logistics performance of fresh milk processing firms in Kenya were the study objectives. The research design applied for the study was descriptive design and the target population was all the 42 licensed milk processing firms in Kenya as listed by the Kenya Dairy Board (2021). Primary data which acquired through the application of questionnaires was used. Questionnaires were administered through electronic mail and also dropped off at respondents premises and later picked up. For data analysis, descriptive statistics was used for objective one whilst regression analysis was used for objective two. On the first objective, it was established that distribution network collaboration and transport management were adopted to a large extent while distribution information technology optimization, backhaul management and omni-channel distribution management were moderately adopted by the fresh milk processing firms in Kenya. On the other hand, with p values of less than five percent, the findings indicate that distribution network economy - distribution network collaboration, transport management, distribution information technology optimization, backhaul management and omni-channel distribution - has a positive and significant relationship on logistics performance (logistics cost and timeliness) of fresh milk processing firms in Kenya. It is recommended that distribution information technology optimization, backhaul management and omni-channel distribution management be embraced to a larger extent as they were found to be moderately adopted. Future studies should also focus on distribution network economy strategies in other sectors – pharmaceutical firms, franchise outlets, retailers or even county governments - and not limit this to milk processing firms in Kenya. The context can also be decentralized from Kenya to the county levels like Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia or Nairobi counties among others.

interest rate capping and share price of kenya commercial banks listed in nairobi securities exchange
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: business
Author: waweru, churchil

The study examined the effect of the interest rate capping on the share price of Kenya commercial banks listed in the Nairobi securities exchange. The control variables of the study were dividend yield, inflation rate, profitability, exchange rates and GDP growth. The study was anchored on three theories, namely, the efficient market hypothesis, arbitrage pricing theory and behavioral finance theory. The panel research design was adopted in this study. The panel research design was best suited since panel data was used. The study used secondary data obtained from the NSE market reports, NSE handbook, CBK reports and the individual banks' annual reports. The targeted population of the study was 11 commercial banks listed in the Nairobi stock exchange. The data examined in the study was collected between 2015 and 2021. STATA software was used to generate a quantitative report for analysis. The quantitative report was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study findings indicated that interest rate capping, profitability (ROI), dividend yield, inflation, exchange rates and gross domestic product explain 65.03% of the variations in the share price. The correlation result showed that inflation, profitability (ROI) and gross domestic product are positively associated with share price (0.2162; 0.4213; 0.7301, respectively), while Interest rate capping, dividend yield and exchange rates are negatively associated with share price (-0.1174; -0.3526; -0.2265 respectively). The regression results showed that interest rate capping has a negative and significant effect on share price (β=-5.2962, p=0.0040). The dividend yield is negatively and significantly related to share price (β=-1.2822, p=0.0210). Inflation has a positive and insignificant effect on share prices (β=2.7726, p=0.280). Profitability (return on investments) is positively and significantly related to share prices (β=3.2573, p=0.0060). The exchange rates is negatively and insignificantly related to share prices (β=-0.0162, p=0.9570). The study found that gross domestic product is positively and significantly related to share prices (β=11.2161, p=0.0000). The study concluded that interest rate capping, exchange rates and dividend yield are negatively related to share price while inflation, profitability and gross domestic product are positively related to share prices. The study recommended that interest rate capping should not be introduced in a country since it affects the share prices negatively. The Central bank of Kenya should mutually agree with the commercial banks to ensure the customers are not exploited by the commercial banks by charging exorbitant interest rates instead of putting the interest rate capping. Moreover, it is recommended that commercial banks in Kenya look for strategies to increase profitability as it influences share prices. It is recommended that the government use various economic stimulus programs to boost the country's gross domestic product, as this will positively influence investment in the banking sector

the influence of firm characteristics, and uncertainty avoidance on the relationship between foreign market entry strategies and financial performance of multinational firms in kenya
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: business
Author: smith, christine

The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of firm characteristics and uncertainty avoidance on the direct relationship between foreign market entry strategies and financial performance of listed multinational firms in Kenya. The theories that guided the study were internationalization theory as the anchoring theory, transaction cost theory and resource-based view. Reviewed literature established that several studies had been conducted on the direct relationship between foreign market entry strategies and financial performance of multinational firms. However, these studies did not consider the fact that other possible factors including firm characteristics and uncertainty avoidance of host countries could influence this relationship. The two factors were studied as moderators and hypotheses were generated from them. The general objective of the study was to determine the relationship among firm characteristics, uncertainty avoidance, foreign market entry strategies and financial performance of listed multinational firms in Kenya. Positivism research philosophy was preferred for purposes of making objective conclusions on data collected, their interpretations and their empirical findings. The research design adopted by the study was descriptive design. The type of study was cross-sectional and analytical. Secondary data was collected from the annual reports and audited financial statements of the multinationals studied for the years 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The study was engrossed on publicly listed firms in the Nairobi Securities Exchange. All the 62 listed multinational firms operating in Kenya were considered for the study. Results showed that the average performance index of firms that entered in Kenya through Franchises, wholly owned subsidiaries or through acquisitions performed poorly compared to export firms. The study also established that the relationship between foreign market entry strategies and financial performance of multinational firms was significantly moderated by firm characteristics and uncertainty avoidance. The study findings revealed that exporting as a mode of entry was more profitable than the other entry strategies considered in this study. It was recommended that the selection of an entry strategy be thoroughly scrutinized as the entry chosen has a significant effect on the overall success of a firm’s financial performance. In addition, management should engage all the stakeholders involved in the internationalization process in ensuring that research and development and market evaluation of the host country is effectively carried out to ensure efficiency in choosing the right form of entry into the new market. It was also recommended that shortcomings emerging from this process should be provided to mitigate any unforeseen financial loses. The study further recommended that governing bodies of host countries where rules and regulations do not favor multinational should work towards implementing policies that do not lock out potential foreign investors. The research was confined to public listed multinational corporations operating in Kenya. The study confirmed that the combined effect of firm characteristics, uncertainty avoidance and foreign market entry strategies had more effect on the financial performance of multinational firms than their individual effects. The national government can use the results of this research to formulate and implement favorable policies that can attract foreign investment. The results can also be used to draft useful information and have the same provided to interested parties on the strength of the Kenyan economy, currency stability, and the level of risk acceptance of foreign firms. The Kenyan trade policies should also aim at creating more awareness of Franchising, Wholly Owned Subsidiaries, and Acquisition modes to investors for purposes of balancing the trade. The study suggests that future studies to introduce other variables other than the ones considered in this study. Another suggestion is that firms operating in a similar industry should be studied to arrive at a more sophisticated and precise conclusion.
