ROLE PLAYED BY INTEGRATED COMMUNITY BASED INITIATIVES (ICOBI) ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE OF NYAKABIRIZI DIVISION, BUSHENYI MUNICIPALITY
The study examined the role played by Integrated Community Based Initiatives (ICOBI) on the socio-economic welfare of the people of Nyakabirizi Division, Bushenyi Municipality. The study aimed at examining the extent to which education sponsorship scheme provided by ICOBI has dealt with unemployment problem and the extent to which Home Based HIV/AIDS counseling and testing has led to people’s awareness of the scourge thus improving the social welfare. The study used A survey research design was used, involving Qualitative and quantitative methods. A sample size of 66 respondents was involved in the study. The study used questionnaires and interview guide to collect data. The findings established the extent to which education sponsorship scheme provided by ICOBI has dealt with unemployment problem. The findings revealed that education leads to acquisition of technical skills, they are employable after education graduates are able to create their own jobs. The findings also established the extent to which Home Based HIV/AIDS counseling and testing has led to people’s awareness of the scourge thus improving the social welfare. People who test positive can get treatment, its effective at preventing spread from those who are positive to the negative, other respondents indicated that it also enables positive living through referral to social groups like (TASO), it increases community awareness about HIV, prevent spread and reducing stigma and when one gets to know their status they are able to plan for the future as a benefit of VCT. The study concluded that education sponsorship scheme provided by ICOBI has dealt with unemployment problem in various ways; education leads to acquisition of technical skills, learners are employable after education graduates are able to create their own jobs. The findings also established that home Based HIV/AIDS counseling and testing has led to people’s awareness of the scourge thus improving the social welfare. People who test positive can get treatment, its effective at preventing spread from those who are positive to the negative, enables positive living, increases community awareness about HIV, prevent spread and reducing stigma. The study recommends the government to avail special funds where the HIV/AIDS victims can borrow from to invest in income generating activities, The government should also promote technical education, Increased sensitization on the relevance of HIV disclosure, there is a dire need for income generating activities in order to improve on their quality of life and the community members should support the victims since they need their support socially and economically.
