FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN KAMPALA: A CASE STUDY OF MAKIDYE DIVISION

This study was carried out in the community of Makindye Division after identifying the conditions youth in this area ace. The study had aimed at identifying the factors responsible for youth unemployment in Makindye Division and identifying the ways that can be put in place to combat these youth problems. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches in the searching for information. The findings are that; youth unemployment were found to be; lack of skills and experience, where youth lack required skills to be used in the employment section, negative attitude towards work among the youth. Over population, lack of relevant information and connections, limited resources to set up business for example capital and land among others. The study findings on problems faced by unemployed youth in Makindye Division were that; idleness, poverty, violence are among the problems faced by youth. While the consequences of youth unemployment are isolation from the community, deterioration of the country, global decrease in competitiveness, increase in stress leading to health problems etc. The findings on ways of addressing youth unemployment are; establishing enterprises incubation programmes, developing incentive education institutions and private generation and investing in job creation strategies. The study concluded that factors responsible for youth unemployment in Makindye Division can not only affect the youth but also the community at large, because it hinders development. The study also recommended the efforts that should be raised to help youth financially and practically equip them with skills to enable them create employment opportunities for themselves and reduce poverty levels and unemployment
