THE ROLE OF FUNCTIONAL ADULT LITERACY (FAL) CENTERS TOWARDS ILLITERACY REDUCTION: A CASE STUDY OF MITYANA OPEN PROOF FAL CENTER, BUSIMBI DIVISION MITYANA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL MITYANA DISTRICT
The study was about the role of functional adult literacy (FAL) centers towards illiteracy reeducation and focused on Mityana open proof FAL center as the case study. The study used three study objectives and these were to ascertain the effectiveness of FAL centers in enhancing education in the country, to examine the changes experienced by the beneficiaries of FAL education using Mityana open proof FAL center and to assess the relationship between FAL centers as an informal education system with the formal education centers. The study adopted a case study approach to obtain necessary data and examine the extent of stakeholder participation in the planning process. The study used iinterviews, observation, interview guide and self-Administered Questionnaire as data collection tools with the help of random sampling The study found out that centre offers a wide variety of study options in order to provide sustainable vocational skills also known as non formal education including Hair dressing and weaving, Tailoring and fashion designing, Carpentry and motor vehicle mechanics, Motor cycle repairing, Restaurant management and catering, Language learning and writing (English, Luganda and some mathematics.). it was also found out that some of the major challenges the centre continues to face is the low student retention rate especially among the females. While a big number of students is enrolled into the centre at the start of the first academic year only less than half go through till completion. The study recommended that further investment in the training of instructors, as well as the provision of material incentives, should make the FAL classes more effective and the programme more efficient. Efforts must be made to raise awareness about the benefits of the programme, in order to attract more participants from the target group.
