A REPORT ON INTERNSHIP TRAINING AT BUSIA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS

Internship is a relatively short term course in nature (6-12 weeks) with the primary focus of doing on job training by taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it to the real world. The training took place in the month of September of the year 2020 at Busia Municipal Council Headquarters (Western Division). Echoing the previous section, Busia Municipal Council is a Lower Local Government (LLG) which works under the governing body of Busia district where it’s located. The organization is headed by the Town clerk; this office aims at providing the facilitating role and executive control in making the agency achieve its goals and objectives. I was acting as internee and I participated in most of the activities and would report to the finance offices such as; orientation/induction, recording of cash transactions, filing of bank slips, assisting in the conducting bank reconciliations, receiving and processing invoices, expense forms and requests for payments, writing minutes, secretarial work among others. There was guidance and assessment by both field supervisor and academic supervisor in all activities at the work place. During internship, I was attached to the finance department which is the support office to the organization because it’s actively engaged in each major operations at BMC. During the internship training period at Busia Municipal Council, a number of activities were completed, among the activities that I accomplished; preparation of the work plan, collection of data from the field and receipting of revenues by use of charts of accounts among others. I gained a number of skills and experiences like; Financial skills, Auditing skills, Analytical skills, Time management skills, Leadership skills and so on. Both organisation and personal challenges during my internship training were faced more so the infection of the Corona Virus (Covid-19 Pandemic). In conclusion, he internship training was of great benefit both academically and professionally as it enabled the intern to put theoretic knowledge into practice and also gain a lot of working experience. With respect to the intern’s experience from the internship training recommendations were made to the university, organisation and students such as; Busia Municipal Council needs to start facilitating interns most especially in terms and students should always apply for internship placement in time.
