INFLUENCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN BUMANYA SUB COUNTY –KALIRO DISTRICT
The main purpose of the study was to assess the influence of instructional materials on the teaching of social studies in primary schools in Bumanya Sub County –Kaliro District. The schools involved in the study include; Budehe primary school, Bumanya primary school and Bulyakubi primary school. The study captured response from 30 respondents equally spread among the three primary schools. This includes 3 head teachers, 9 teachers and 18 pupils. And the methods of data collection wasface to face interviews that were administered to the pupils, head teacher and teachers Three major objectives guided the study namely; i. To identify the different forms of instructional materials used in the teaching of social studies in primary schools ii. To determine the environmental factors influencing the use of instructional materials in the teaching of social studies in primary schools iii. To identify the challenges faced in accessing instructional materials on the teaching of social studies in primary schools From the study, it was found out that majority of the participant different forms of instructional materials used in the teaching of social studies in primary schools and the study found out that the most instrument materials used was text book in teaching social studies among the selected primary school as identified above. The most environmental factors influencing the use of instructional materials was space of time especially when teaching social studies, and most challenge faced in accessing instrumental materials on teaching of social studies was high cost of instructional materials for example chalkboard, graphs, charts, maps, pictures, radio among other. The study recommends that the government and the school heads should ensure that instructional materials are available in schools, ensuring that instructional materials are available in schools, processing of selecting instructional materials, the teachers should ensure that the material selected are commensurate to the topic and age level of the pupils especially for social studies in primary schools.
