Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an important source of innovation and improvement of efficiency for many sectors including the education sector across the globe. This has not left Ugandaand Makerere University in particular. This study therefore is aimed at assessing the impact of ICT on the performance of Makerere university students as the overall objective. The specific objectives of this study included, finding out whether there is a significant relationship between possession of electronic gadgets and the performance of students, finding out, those students in possession of ICT tools, how those tools are used, ascertaining ICT adoption by different lecturers and students in various course units, ascertaining whether the university provides enough ICT equipment to the students and finding out the difficulties students at Makerere university students encounter in adoption of ICT for learning purposes.By using both qualitative and quantitative research approach, a sample of 96 students at SSP, data were collected about ICT adoption and its use and the performance of the students. This data was analyzed using both univariate as well as bivariate (chi-square) analysis. The results of the study revealed that there was no significant relationship between the different ICT gadgets used, the way they are used and their performance. The findings further revealed on the other hand that there exists significant relationship between the lecturers‟ ICT adoption and university support against the performance of the students. However, students‟ major concern was on the network issues and high costs of data, as the results revealed. Finally, the research is summarized with the discussion of findings and recommendations to the government, university as well as the students.

the role of poverty in influencing school dropout among primary school pupils in kisenyi parish, kalungi sub-county, nakasongola district, uganda

Type: dissertations
Subject: social work and social administration

According to the research that I made, I discovered that, it is the role of Poverty that influences school dropout among primary school pupils, this so because as poverty was considered largely unavoidable by, even today Poverty still affect some families and make them lack food, medical care, school fees, and other necessities, hence leading to school dropout among primary school pupils. The influence of poverty denies Uganda children an opportunity to pursue education. This is the reason why free primary and secondary education was introduced in Uganda for standard one to seven and S.1 to higher level by H.E Yoweri. K. Museveni in 1996 for UPE and 2005 for USE. The study investigated the role of poverty in influencing school dropout among primary school Pupils in Kisenyi Parish, Kalungi Sub-County, Nakasongola District, Uganda. The study was guided by the following objectives; To establish the factors that lead to school dropout among primary school pupils, to find out how poverty influence school dropout among primary school pupils and to suggest possible interventions on how to reduce school dropout among primary school pupils. Chapter three gives the research methodology. In the research study, the methods that the researcher used for data collection were interviews for 25 Dropped out pupils, 8 Continuing pupils and 4 Local Council Leaders. And questionnaires for 12 Teachers, and 1DEO.In the research study, the researcher also used simple random Sampling and purposive sampling techniques to sample respondents involved in the study. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Chapter five provides the conclusion and recommendations. The research findings concluded that the factors that cause dropout among pupils are; Poor learning resource, unfavorable school environment, Poor teacher quality, fear of teachers, excessive corporal punishment, ineffective teaching, persistence poor performance, long distance from school, lack of food provision in school and poor administration. Also the findings indicated that children from uneducated parents are more likely to dropout from schools than children from educated parents. In conclusion, despite the government’s efforts through U.P.E to improve the quality of education with emphasis to equal access for boys and girls, dropout is still an alarming issue where girl pupils dropout more than boy pupils. I recommend for sensitization of parents on the importance of education so as to understand their role and involvement in their children education. According to this research study, I would recommend that, the community should be sensitized more about the value of education that is when the parents and children will understand their role and involvement in their children education and become aware of benefits of education, hence reducing the rate of school dropout among primary school pupils. Further research is needed to actually investigate the role of poverty in influencing school dropout among the primary school pupils in this region.

promoting banana macro propagation to ensure use of clean suckers to reduce disease infestation and increase availability of planting materials to the banana farmers of kati ka ndegeya village, kalagala subcounty in luwero district
Level: university
Type: dissertations
Subject: agriculture and rural innovations
Author: namuleme fatuma

The field attachment was conducted with banana farmers of BajjaBasaagaKibikke farmers Group of Kati KaNdegeya village located in Kalagala Subcounty in Luweero District. BajjaBasaagaKibikke Farmers group works in association with ZAABTA, which was my host organisation. ZAABTA is located Northwest of Kampala, 50km along Kampala Zirobwe road, Zirobwe subcounty Luwero District. I did my SELPS I from DEL Agribusiness and Agrotoursm Farm in Nama Subcounty in Mukono District but because the farm had stopped working with interns, I changed and my SELPS II from ZAABTA. Being my first time in the area, I carried out a rapid rural appraisal where I identified the most pressing need as pests and diseases in banana fields of farmers in Kati KaNdegeya village. I together with the farmers agreed on the banana macro propagation project which is a relatively easy way of producing clean suckers by minimizing sucker transmitted pests and diseases as well as producing up to 64 suckers from one corm making suckers available to farmers. My extension objective was to reduce pest and disease infestation in banana fields in Kati Kandegeyausing banana macro propagation through demonstrating and training farmers how to multiply suckers in propagators and nursery beds. My research objective was to investigate the impact of banana macro propagation on availability of planting materials My internship objectives were; to scale out the use of banana macro propagation to reduce pests and diseases infestation in farmer’s field in Kati KaNdegeya village. To establish the causes of pests and disease infestation in farmers banana fields. To establish the impact of pests and diseases on sucker availabity. To establish the impact of pests and disease infestation on the productivity and profitability of the banana growing households. To establish possible solutions to pest and disease infestation in Kati KaNdegeya village. The methods and tools used to disseminate and collect information or data included focus group discussion, questionnaires both evaluation and baseline farmer meetings, demonstrations, observation check lists, pair wise ranking. I found out that men participate in banana growing more than women i.e. (69%) and (31%) respectively because women don’t have total control over land. The technology was adopted by 54% of the farmers who were trained. Though more women attended the training, the innovation was adopted more by men because it requires setting up propagators and nursery beds and providing optimum conditions for the seedling such as regulating the light and watering the seedling daily and therefore requiring a lot of energy. The government through its extension programs need to do more sensitization about the banana macro propagation being that banana is a major staple in Central Uganda and a major source of livelihood in most western districts of Uganda.
